Nurse rescheduling with shift preferences and minimal disruption

چکیده
Hospital wards must be staffed 24 hours a day by a limited number of nurses. With a well documented shortage of nurses in many countries, effective rostering of nurse shifts is crucial. Recent research on nurse rostering has focused on creating flexible rosters that are attractive to nurses, with the joint aims of improving the quality of care and increasing staff retention. To achieve this, some level of preference rostering is desirable in a nurse rostering model. Furthermore, if a nurse is unable to work their assigned shifts or nursing cover requirements change, then gaps will occur in the overall roster that must be filled by rerostering in a manner that disrupts a little as possible the existing roster. Little research has been carried out on rerostering nurses while considering their own preferences as well as well as minimising disruption. This paper will present some models for nurse rostering and rerostering that consider nurses’ preferences, along with some preliminary computational results.

متن کاملA Nurse Scheduling Model under Real Life Constraints
Background and Objectives: In this paper, a real life nurse scheduling model is described based on the conditions in Iranian hospitals such as monthly shift rotation, consecutive morning and evening shifts and consecutive evening and night shift. Methods: The developed model considers both hospital constraints and nurses’ preferences. Hospital constraints include assigning adequate qualifie...
متن کاملThe nurse rerostering problem: An explorative study
Oftentimes, hospitals encounter disruptions of nurse schedule due to unforeseen absence of nurses from their scheduled shifts. Known as the nurse rerostering problem, this problem is commonplace in most hospitals all over the world. In such uncertain environments, decision analysis need to reconstruct the roster, ensuring minimal changes on the original roster, subject to reported disruptions. ...
متن کاملOperating Room Scheduling Considering Patient Priorities and Operating Room Preferences: A Case Study
Operating rooms have become the most important areas in hospitals because of the scarcity and cost of resources. The present study investigates operating room scheduling and rescheduling considering the priority of surgical patients in a specialized hospital. The ultimate purpose of scheduling is to minimize patient waiting time, surgeon idle time between surgeries, and penalties for deviations...
متن کاملNurse rostering using fuzzy logic: A case study
In this paper, we used the fuzzy set theory for modeling flexible constraints and uncertain data in nurse scheduling problems and proposed a fuzzy linear model for nurse rostering problems. The developed model can produce rosters that satisfy hospital objectives, ward requirements and staff preferences by satisfying their requests as much as possible. Fuzzy sets are used for modeling demands of...
